WORDS FROM THE WEBMASTER:

Welcome to the November issue of the THSESWS newsletter, the christmas is only around the corner and I hope everyone is in excellent health. We have got a fair bit of content for this month's newsletter so - without further ado, I would like to quote two messages posted on our "Lalo Kasia Forum" in regards to our web site. I am deeply moved by these two messages and I must sincerely convey my thanks to those two who anonymously posted these lovely messages. Thank you so much. I do use these kind words as motivational tools.

A pleasure......

Hi Loseli!

I would like to THANK YOU for all your ongoing effort and dedication in managing our THSES website. I must say, it's a combination of a touch of class and a stroke of professionalism, which only reflects by those who hold the utmost respect to themselves and as equally to others.

Malo e ngaue!

Hounga'ia.
ex-student of '74

During the later stages of the month of October, there has been some new families added to the list of Tonga High School ex-students who celebrated their weddings. There was one in Melbourne and one in Canberra. Congratulations to those new couples and may you have a happy marriage.

Finally, the THSESWS would also like to welcome the chapter of Canberra and that of Brisbane, it is hoped that other chapters who have not submitted the list of their members or have had some new members since your list was last updated may do so in the near future.

Faka'apa'apa atu,
'Amelia Piutau.

Once again,'Amelia Pitau deserves another big applause for this article. I also want to personally thank 'Amelia, for the great work she has done in writing articles for our monthly newsletters. 'Amelia has now become a regular writer for our monthly newsletters and as usual she has come up with another fantastic article (a masterpiece - hats off to 'Amelia) for us all to read. 'Amelia, I don't know what I would do without your ongoing help and support for our web site. Once again, thank you 'Amelia and may god give you good health and abundance of energy to enable you to keep up this excellent work of yours.

For all our ex-students out there, remember that the THSESWS would also welcome articles from any of you. I am sure you are all capable of writing something for us.

My friends, we will value any contribution - big or small, what really counts is the thought of being able to SHARE with others !

STRESS RELIEVERS: (Fanga ki'i talanoa eni ketau ki'i kata ai)

Story #1

In Africa, two men were standing beside a river that they're just about to cross when they noticed a number of crocodiles staring at them. "Are you afraid?" Said one to the other. "Don't you know that God is merciful and good?" "Yes, I do," says the frightened man. "But what if God suddenly chooses right now to be good to the crocodiles?"

Story #2

A bus full of politicians was speeding down a country road when it swayed into a field and crashed into a tree. The farmer who owned the field went over to investigate. He then dug a hole and buried the politicians. A few days later, the sheriff drove by and saw the overturned bus. He knocked on the farmhouse door and asked where all the politicians had gone. The farmer said that he had buried them. "Were they all dead?" The sheriff asked. "Well, some of them said they weren't," replied the farmer, "but you know how politicians lie."

Story #3: This is a true story.

Ha'u heni e ongo matapule mei Tonga ko e fe'inga'i ha ki'i seniti ke kumi ha fafangu ki honau ki'i siasi. Kautama, me'a oli mo'oni eni. Mau fakataha atu ia ki he 'api pe 'o hoku tokoua 'e taha 'o fai ai 'emau ki'i faikava mo lakulaku seniti 'o hange pe ko e fanga ki'i kalapu 'i Tonga. Ko e me'a leva ne hoko ko 'ena lele ki he pangike 'o toho mai ha seniti ki he kalapu. Ha'u e ongo tokoua ni mo 'ena seniti ko e taki nima noa ($50 notes).

Taimi eni ia na'aku kei ako ai he 'univesiti pea neu fu'u masiva 'aupito(still is). Ko ia ai neu pehe keu vete 'a 'eku $50 ke taki $5(talk about planning ahead). Ko 'eku palani teu li tu'o hongofulu ki he mala'e. 'Aia koe 'osi pe takai inu kuo takitaha nunusi 'ene ki'i la'ipepa pa'anga pea li ki loto. Manatu'i ko e dollar notes kuo pau ke kuku'i ia ke memei fuopotopoto kimu'a pea toki li kae lava ke a'u ki he feitu'u 'oku li kiai (those who are doing physics will understand the science behind this in terms of projection, velocity and acceleration. However, by the time you squeeze the note so hard, it is hard to tell whether it is a $5, $10, $50 etc. It is also a bit hard to see at night). Ko hoku ongo tokoua nena taki $200. 'Aia tena li tu'o 4 'i he 'osi e takai inu 'e 4.

Toutou li pe au ia. Ko e fai mai ai pe 'a e fakamalo. "Malo, malo e li 'a Loseli". 'Ikai foki anga e setuata ia ki he lanu 'o e pa'anga 'Aositelelia. Ko e me'a 'oku fai e sio ia ki ai, ko hai 'oku toutou li (amount is irrelevant in this case, the setuata identifies your amount by how often you put in rather than the numerical value of what you put in).

Ko e kava Tonga foki koe lahi pe ko e inu kuo tau konaa. 'Osi e takai hono ono kuo 'ikai toe li ha taha ia. Li li pe 'a Loseli ia. Kautama, kaila hoku tokoua 'oku ia e taha, "Loseli ko ho'o fu'u vao nima 'au ia mei fe?" I will keep you in suspense by drawing your own conclusion.

Na'e 'ikai ko ha'aku pau'u eni, ka koe me'a fakavale he anga ka ko e masiva.

BRAIN TEASER: Tau ki'i fakalelei 'atamai heni.

A boss of a factory who makes golf balls said to his employees, "my faithful workers, it is almost christmas and I am in such a good mood. I have decided to give someone an extra $500.00 as a christmas present if he/she can solve this problem for me. Now, here is the problem - I have got 7 of our new brand golf balls here in a bag. However, there is one odd ball out of the 7. That is, one ball is only a fraction heavier than the rest. I want someone to identify the odd one out by devising a method of weighing the balls in order to determine which one is the heaviest."

Note that problem solving is now embraced by so many companies and they encourage their workers to do them regularly. The benefit is enormous in terms of production outputs and quality control.

Assumptions:

All types of scales are available to the employees. One must select any of the scales according to his/her method devised for the problem. There is no way, you can identify the odd ball without weighing - the odd one out is only a few milligrams heavier than the rest.

Rules:

You are only allowed to weigh the balls only twice, that is - you must identify the odd ball (heaviest) after only two weighing and no more. Planning is critical. Note, you might be lucky to simply take two balls out and weigh them and if the odd ball out of the 7 is one of those two then of course the problem will be solved. However, this is due to pure chance rather than a mathematical solution.

Note, quessing must be eliminated from your planning. Be methodical about your approach. You may share your solution with others by posting it on our forum. GOOD LUCK....

FAKA'AMU: Kuo ofi e kilisimasi pea kuo taimi ketau fakaofiofi ki falelotu.
