Tonga High School is the main campus and is in Nuku'alofa, Tongatapu. This magnificent school was established in 1947. The growing number of students in the Kingdom has made it impossible for the main campus to cater for all the top students in the kingdom. Something had to be done and this lead to the idea of decentralizing the main campus.
The creation of other campuses (which are independent of Tonga High School) ensures that all students with the ability to do well are catered for. All endeavours were made to run basically the same curriculum in all campuses. Most have been achieved.
As the premier Government Secondary School, Tonga High School students are offered an
unprecedented opportuntity with the better facilities and teaching staff of all school
system in Tonga. It is of course a privilege to attend Tonga High School. It must be noted that the school offers students academic excellence and equal opportunities are given to all students irrespective of social, economic background and religion. All you have to do is to perform well academically and the chance to attend Tonga High School is yours.
With all good things in life, they carry high expectations and certain standards. In this light, students of Tonga High are expected and tend to perform much better academically than those of other schools in the kingdom. Indeed, it is rare and unusual for Tonga High to be out-performed by students of other schools. From its prestige, and continued higher performance in National examinations, Tonga High School is able to maintain a student intake of high academic potential.
The growing demands for high quality education for the students of Tonga are also part
of the contributing factors to building more government high school campuses in the
outer islands of Tonga. The government has made it a priority to invest in education and students in order to
make Tonga more competitive on a global scale. These investments have really paid off and in 1997 there were more Tongans with PhD degrees per capita than anywhere else in the world (source: ABC Australia).
