Poem by Peter 'Aho

It seems like only yesterday
When we first with eager faces, grey uniforms & taovala
Singing hymns as
The prefects, the teachers, the Principal
Told us how to behave, misbehave
And that
We were always to strive to be the best.

Yet our classrooms needed paint
And so many times sorely needed
But that was not ours to ponder
We lived for fun of discussing
Math's, English, History...and the girls..
They were so beautiful...but we...
Were too busy trying to get into the 1st Fifteen!!

And there was homework, so much....
I did some, forgot some and made so many excuses
To my patient understanding teachers whose advise became so dear
particularly when exams drew near
That in struggling to reply
I tried so hard to recall
Some earthly wisdom.

Then came the Band Practices
The Performances, the competitions, the tours
The Fund Raising...
I never danced and laughed so much
Playing the same tune again and again
For a few Dollars more
Be it Tonga, New Zealnd, Australia or America.

And then they came in hundreds...
For the celebrations of the 50th Golden Jubilee
Amidst the dancing, feasting and singing
We cleaned, cleared and ran so many messages
Ensuring that all were happy
And participating orderly.

Has it really been 6 years now???
Since that first day of belonging...
As Head Prefect my responsibilities...
This year has been hefty
Trying, to bridge that link between my
Fellow students and
The demanding but caring staff.

Yet the laughter, the joy of being a student
Sharing differences, similarities, conflicts
Meandering through Computers, Physics, Accounting
Making the grades as well as suffering the pain of not making them
Knowing that I always had you
My friends
Too soon we part and move on in LIFE
But the raintree, the now painted classrooms
Linger on in memories untainted
Tonga High School you'll always be
A greater part of what is me.
