Principal's Report - '99

The final year of the 20th Century has only ended. This year is definitely a stepping stone in the history of Tonga High School, many new heights have been reached and many goals have been achieved by the students of our school in all aspects and situations.

But there are some people (and their achievements) that should be noted by everyone. Firstly, I would like to express feelings of sincere gratitude to the PTA. Every year the PTA provides a backbone that the school could not function without. Under the guidance of Dr. Akanesi Makakaufaki, this body of devoted workers managed money, people and time to make sure that the students and staff of Tonga High School were getting as much as they should out of the School, improving both buildings and adding more equipment and staff In the same way, Vuki Tangitau and the Ex-students Body and particular groups of ex-students deserve recognition for their contributions specifically the $10,000 worth of Science Laboratory equipment. The young scientist of tomorrow who are trained at Tonga High School should know who to thank! Also for assistance and for providing scholarships. Another group of people who have proved their devotion to their beliefs were the church leaders and youth evangelists who came and led both junior and senior Religious Instruction. And also to the people who came and provided Praise and Worship every Thursday lunch-time throughout the year, we are grateful. Thank-you also for your ongoing prayers which have built up the spiritual foundation of the School. Finally to two precious gems the school would not even exist without, farewell to Luisa Vivili and Sela Vete. Thank-vou Luisa for you devoted many years of your life, trying to make the school a better place. In your profile, I hope the school managed to give you a sufficient picture of how grateful we are. And Sela, our library has been a quieter place and worked more efficiently since you appeared on the scene. We (the School as a body) remain in debt to all of these people. Another rare stone, is the now retired Reverend Tevita Kamitoni, you were greatly missed as we prepared for the Prize Giving Ceremony and thanks also for all your work in training our wonderful band. Farewell to Soana Lala who departed to Central Planning Department. (There are tributes to those who have left in this edition). Finally, to Lasalle from Campus II, thank-you for all the great collaborative moments, it's reassuring to know that we are part of a whole, despite geographical detachment!

In the world of sports and athletics, Tonga High School is working towards greatness as well. This year at the Intercollege Sports, Tonga High School won eight (8) gold medals and twenty-three (23) others! This is a historical feat, and should be remembered;congratulations! In rugby and nethall there were a series of victories among the defeats. In rugby, Grade Two and Three won their respective Shields, and in netball only two Shields managed to go to other schools, all other Shields reside in a place of honour in the Library. Also this year we had a new sport, the soccer teams who enthusiastically kicked their way to victory. Also Malia Fa'asolo, one of the Junior Girls, won a Soccer Scholarship for next year. The National Quiz and the Science Quiz were quite successful also. Tonga High School came third in the National Quiz, falling from the first place but remaining a threat and still in the running. In the Science Quiz, our team placed FIRST and went away with smiles no-one could match! Thank-you all who participated, teachers and students.

The last words are still those of gratitude. A BIG thank-you goes out to the Deputy Principal, Siosi for her immeasurable support throughout the school year. You have done what was and more still, thank-you for all the small things which went unnoticed as well. Also to all the Staff members, new and old, retiring and those remaining. Also to the Prefects and the Students. Prefects, the school is a place to learn but you were given the chance to teach as well. I hope EVERYBODY has leamt from you. Also to the ancillary staff, Taniela Bloomfield, 'Asinate Liu, Mafile'o Tupou, and Sela Vete who have added to the atmosphere of the School's prestigious reputation. Thank-you. And to all who have intersected with Tonga High School to our benefit, may God's blessings be upon each and every one of you.

To all of Tonga High School,

Felicitations and Best Wishes

Dr Lia Latu Maka
