CLASS OF '76 RE-UNION: (Supplied by Tevita Tapa)
The second reunion of this class was held in Tonga on 26th to 29th December 1999. It was hosted by fellow ex-students permanently residing in Tonga. The main organisers of this memorable event were:
President: | Tapu Panuve |
Asst. Presidents: | Senituli Manu & Fifita Manu (nee Fakasi'i'eiki) |
Treasurer: | Paula Ma'u |
Asst. Treasurer: | Ma'ata Sikalu (nee Maileseni) |
Secretary: | Ana Sekilini 'Akau'ola (nee Toumu'a) |
Asst. Secretary: | 'Olivia Makisi |
Main supporters (kau poupou fefeka) were: Jessie Cocker, Kefu Fonua, Antoinette 'Ahio (nee Moheloa), Sunia Soakai, Manusiu Mafi (nee Moa).
The idea of holding such an event stemmed from a Class of '76 meeting that was held in Nuku'alofa during the celebration of THS Silver Jubilee in 1997. Ex-fellow students came from different part of the world and as everyone got excited about catching up with each other it was suggested that a regular class reunion should be organised as it seemed an ideal way of maintaining close contacts and getting to know each other better. More importantly it was an avenue that class mates could help out each other. For instance, the success of many ex-student in their chosen field of work, be it medical, law, administration or private business was very obvious. By maintaining close contact it would be easy to seek advise or assistant from each other because as we all know we can't all be doctors or lawyers or wealthy but it would be useful to have a friend who is one. It's indeed a very practical and useful idea and is already being put into practice. Of course, another main feature of such an event is that it provided an opportunity to worship and give thanksgiving prayer together, there was ample opportunity to catch up with what everyone else was up to i.e. who's married & to whom, who's not married & why etc. Memories of the old Tonga High School days came flooding back, especially the embarrassing moments which made every one laughed so hard. Last but not the least it was a good excuse to eat, drink and party. Spouses/partners & children were warmly invited to all the program (as appropriate).
Sunday, 26th December 1999
The reunion formally commenced with everyone meeting up at Saione (Free Wesleyan Church in Nuku'alofa) to attend the Sunday service. Saione was chosen because it was considered the most central church location for everyone. We chose Sunday as a commencing date because as we know it a typical Sunday in Tonga is a restful day with everyone relaxed and free and sober too. It was followed with a shared lunch at Senituli Manu's place in Tofoa. Lunch was prepared in the traditional way with lu, taro and mutton cooked in the 'umu and a suckling pig roasted on the spit.
Monday, 27th December 1999
A picnic was held at Princess Resort in Fo'ui. We had the exclusive use of the resort's bbq and bar area. A bbq was prepared for lunch and everyone had a wonderful time, especially the children. There was plenty of food, refreshments and too much drinks. We stayed till late noon and than went back home to get ready for an evening drive along the waterfront, enjoying the night scenes and the cool sea breeze of Nuku'alofa.
Tuesday, 28th December 1999
The next day was organised by ex-fellow students travelling from overseas. They wanted something a bit different so they organised for a fisherman to bring in fresh fish while everyone waited anxiously with the fire burning along Sopu's shoreline. And so we waited and waited and waited and getting very hungry too. Just as we were losing hope and were about to sent for some curries, our fisherman finally came ashore and it was well after 10pm. We had the fish cooked on charcoal and cut up for a raw delicacy in no time at all with plaintains (haka hopa) to compliment it all (a feast never to be forgotten). The night continued till early morning with everyone just talking and laughing and eating again until we couldn't withstand the mosquito bites.
Wednesday, 29th December 1999
As most people had to return to work on this day the program was set for the evening with dinner at Lily's Chinese Restaurant in Ma'ufanga (Vuna Rd) and a meeting to formally close the reunion straight afterward. Of course no one wanted to go home too early so it was a last minute decision to go pub-crawling. We started off at the Waterfront Restaurant & Bar (Vuna Rd) then we moved on to Bill Fish Restaurant & Bar (Vuna Rd) to partake in the karaoke competition, then we moved on to Ambassador in Tofoa, then we moved on to the Millennium Bar at Fatafehi Rd, then we moved on to the One Night Stand Bar (Ramanlal Hotel) and last but not the least we ended up at the Blue Pacific Night Club at Ananaa. It was about 5am when we decided to go home but before going home we headed straight to Senituli Manu's place for a Tongan breakfast.
Unfortunately, not everyone was able attend this unforgettable occasion due to personal commitments but those of us who were fortunate enough to make it to this special occasion we can only confirm that the idea behind our class reunion truly worked. We've gotten to know each other better and have continued to maintain contacts via email/phone/correspondence and most importantly we had the best time ever. The organisers of this reunion (as mentioned above) must be congratulated on a well planned & well organised program. It's clear that the efforts and consideration put into running and organising this class reunion was "to the best".
Regards
Class of '76 ex-fellow students
