WORDS FROM THE WEBMASTER & OUR NEWSLETTER EDITOR:

Welcome to the THSESWS monthly newsletter for the month of April 2002. It is now less than 6 weeks before the big event in New Zealand. The THSESWS has been informed by the New Zealand Association that the final program is yet to be finalised and therefore requested that a special edition of our monthly newsletters be published on the second week of May. This special edition will feature all necessary information regarding the celebration. Therefore, check out this special edition during the second week of May. The THSESWS will do its best to inform you all on the online availability of this special edition. Stay tuned folks!

Melbourne has just held their function on April 27 and on behalf of the Melbourne, I would like to thank the "Working Committee" (Ma'ata, Latu, Loketi, Finau, 'Aneti, and those behind the scene) in their effort which has contributed to the success of Melbourne's function. See below for more on the Melbourne Chapter function.

The other chapters are busy preparing for the celebration.

NEWS FROM MELBOURNE:

Absolutely marvellous is the only way the Melbourne Chapter function can be described. The mood was fantastic, the atmosphere was electric, the scenery was hot, the ladies were absolutely gorgeous, the men were in awe of the beauties around them, the dances were out of this world and the whole function was totally magnificent. For the great effort of the Melbourne people and our visitors, the Melbourne Chapter collected $7,000.

On behalf of the president and the secretaries of the Melbourne Chapter, I would like to thank all Tonga High School Ex-students for their effort in making this function such a success. Special thanks to the "Working Committee" for all their hard work in planning and implementing such an important event. The event was either going to "Break" us or "Make" us and I am glad that we are still in one piece and the success of our function was phenomenal. The success of the Melbourne function is no ordinary feat, it takes a lot of time and effort to run such an event and full marks to the Working Committee for a great job. The Working Committee is made up of a tight core - consists of Loketi, Latu, Ma'ata, Finau and Lavinia. This committee is well supported by 'Aneti, Jason Kioa, Anthony, Tanekai, Milise, Susana, 'Ikani, Alo, Seini, Bubsy, Fieme'a and other 'Ex-students' whom I can't list for there are too many of them.

Special thanks to Fotolina Kioa(wife of Rev. Kioa) for her continual support and hard work, every time we have anything to do with our ex-students – she is always there. Fotolina has excelled without any complaints. This is such a great effort from someone who is not a Tonga High School Ex-student. Thank you so much Fotolina, you are a role model for most of us!

Welcoming Speech & Others

Janette Rollo opened the evening with a short speech to welcome our entire guests and to make everyone feel comfortable. After that, Helen Taliai (wife of Siupeli Taliai) gave a memorable speech on her days as a student at Tonga High School. She talked about the early days (Helen was in the class of '48) and how she has seen the school developed from a small school to become the best school in the kingdom. It was an interesting speech indeed and it brought back memories for most of our ex-students. Followed by Helen's speech was Anthony Tu'ipeatau' speech. Anthony gave us a speech, which related to a more recent era and it was fascinating to make comparisons about the two speeches in terms of how things have changed since the early days of the school. To finish off the speech section, Salome (a student in the '60s) gave us quite a funny speech on how she and others used to annoy (teen crushes) the boys in their class. Interesting stuff indeed!

Items (Faiva):

All the dances were absolutely fantastic. To set the scene and the mood for the night, the Melbourne Chapter's ma'ulu'ulu took centre stage right on 8 pm. This was followed by all dances programmed for the night. The Kioa Girls(three of them) performed three items for the night which had a mixed of Polynesian dancing. These three girls were absolutely brilliant (with an ex-Queen Salote mum – what do you expect!). There was also a Somoan dance which was great and it brought more cultural diversity to our night. The Sokee featuring

Outside Supporters

  • Special thanks go out to Fa'uhiva Lutui (the dance instructor) for his tireless effort in teaching both the ma'ulu'ulu and the Sokee. Well-done Fatafehi and your professionalism shone brilliantly on Saturday night.
  • We would also like to thank the "Fofo'anga Group" for providing serene music to all of us in during the breaks. Their music reminded us of our faikava nights back in Tonga. Well done guys and thank you so much for your support.
  • Finally, the Melbourne Chapter would like to thank the Tongan Community of Victoria for their great support and their willingness to support our function. Your contributions are greatly appreciated.

Visitors From Other Territories:

It was such a surprise for me personally to see Lavinia Naufahu and visitors from Canberra (my former Territory). They absolutely enjoyed the night and their contributions were very much appreciated.

Photos of the Melbourne Chapter were already online and can be viewed using this LINK
