WORDS FROM THE WEBMASTER & OUR NEWSLETTER EDITOR:
Welcome to the THSESWS monthly newsletter for the month of August 2002. As seen on the picture above, members of the San Franscisco Chapter
paid a visit to his Majesty, King Taufa'ahau Tupou IV. According to our correspondents from San Francisco,"this was quite a treat for all members who
did turn up, His Majesty was pleased to see ex-students of the school that he founded in 1947".
During the last week of the month, our editor - Miss 'Amelia Piutau contacted the principal of Tonga High School in an effort to keep our channel of
communication with the current school more proactive. The principal was pleased to hear that ex-students of Tonga High School living abroad are infact
very interested in the welfare of current students and everything else that is going on in regards to Tonga High School. Lata Langi (the principal) has assured
Miss Piutau that she will do everything she can to keep ex-students abroad informed of what is going on with Tonga High School. Let's cross our fingers
and hope for the best!

LONG
LIVE THE KING OF TONGA!
Incredible
was the experience, though rare, some of the San Francisco Chapter members,
were privileged to have an audience with His Majesty, at his residence,
Tau’akipulu in Hillsborough, San Francisco (8/02).
Those who seized
this propitious opportunity, to be up close and personal with His Majesty,
were certainly honored and very appreciative, for his forethought and his
astounding future intuition. His vision has far reaching effects, hence
very advantageous, directly and indirectly to all who were fortunate, to
trail his footsteps.
His Majesty
was in excellent health, receiving us in splendid spirit.
Advisor, Leafa
Tuita Taumoepeau’s, cultural knowledge and insight, guided us through the
appropriate protocol, a hand on lesson, for those of us who lacked in traditional
perception. Cultural presentation was organized by the Advisor and the
President, Ma’ata F. Misinale, on behalf of the women. The Tonga Consulate
in San Francisco, Tevita ‘O. Kolokihakaufisi, was generous enough to prepare
His Majesty’s banquet (taumafa) on behalf of the men. Our eloquent spokesman
for this mission was, Samuela Hala’ufia, and leading us with the spiritual
thanksgiving offering, was the devout ‘Eliate Laulaupea’alu.
WORD FROM
SAN FRANCISCO CHAPTER’S ADVISOR! (Leafa Tuita Taumoepeau)
“Please extend
a BIG THANK YOU to all ex-students, who participated in the visit
to the King. I understand that in our country, feelings are divided
regarding Royalty. I say “to each his own”, but sometimes we need to separate
the issues, to enable us to have a clearer picture. The fact remains, he
is our founder and within each of us, still is that feeling of gratitude.
When he’s gone, then we will not be obligated to pay our respect, to anymore
‘hou’eiki’ if we do not want to.
‘Ofa

UPDATE- FYI!
1. SAN
FRANCISCO – “HOLA!” TRUE, to the spirit of “To the Best,”
and pressing firmly on the pedal, the San Franciscans resorted to getting
their hands dirty, in order for this project to be successful. Our vigorous
approach, is mainly due to the “time constraints,” and our aspiration to
give this commemoration our all. A successful General meeting, ensue the
Working Committee’s initial meeting last month, where a lot of the members
attended and shared magnificent ideas.
The undisputable
dedication, plus the genuine devotions to Tonga High School, offers great
potential to the Association, hence draws out more of it’s members to active
participation. Consequently our future prospect looks very very promising.
The Committee is anticipating more, if not all of its members to partake
in this historical and festive celebration. “THANKS TO ALL S.F. members
for attending our last meeting!”
Tweaking and
twisting, scheduling and planning are very much underway. The BLUEPRINT
of the master plan was drafted to scale and was approved by the General
membership with no contest. The delicate cosmetic detailing is the Committee’s
next major undertake.
2. AOTEARA
–“ KIA ORA!”
Words are spreading like wild fire, and it draws our attention to the class
of 1968, led by a few troopers from NZ. They embark on a mission of their
own, with their gaze fixed further out than the Kiwi dare to venture. San
Francisco’s Golden Gate Bridge is their ultimate destination. “Welcome
class of 1968!”
3. THE
FRIENDLY ISLANDS – “MALO’ E LELEI!” Tongans ex-student’s enthusiasm
is contagious since NZ, and can’t be contained, according to George Moengangongo
( Executive Committee Vice President). Initiations and queries, as to when
the ‘ako faiva’ aspects initially begins, is a frequent proposal posed
these days.
San Franciscans,
are drawing from the camaraderie spirit expressed by these groups of ex-students,
and certainly will follow suit to keep the flame of the torch brightly
ablaze, till we pass it on to the succeeding host.
Suffice to
say, inquiries are pouring in to the Committee, in quest of information
pertinent to next year’s festivity. Support is also, extremely phenomenal.
Local chapters are as fervent as we are, such as Los Angeles, Salt Lake
City, Sacramento, Seattle, Oregon, Alaska, Hawaii, San Diego and Reno etc.
We are thrilled, to recognize such positive response; moreover we expect
a close affiliation with these neighborly chapters.
As always, the
San Franciscans will not stifle you with suspense, but will keep you posted
as we promised, but for now SIT BACK, RELAX and TAKE IT EASY under the
KASIA TREE, kae palu ha tau kava, as we await the main SHOW.

We would like to take the opportunity to extend our sincere gratitude to our fellow

Siasi Fktahataha - 25th Celebration
The Tongan Congregation Church (Loto Tonga) would be conducting a Church celebration towards the end of the month of August and we proposed for our Lakalaka to be part of the entertainment. However, the Punake was not feeling well and and not many people attending practice, we had to cancel this event.
Launching of new book - "Island Kingdom Strikes Back"
The newly published book by Kalafi Moala known as 'Island Kingdom strikes back' was launched in Auckalnd recently. Kalafi is an ex student of THS and he was in the class of 1959.
Graduate
We would like to congratulate 'Amipeliasi Palu for completing his Bcom degree at University of Auckland. Well done 'Amipeliasi!
Classes of 1968, 1972, 1978, 1985 & 1986
These classes are consistently maintaining meetings and get together in preparation for the trip to the America as the next THS celebration is confirmed to be held at San Francisco.
NEWS FROM MELBOURNE:
It is now only a few days away from our spring and the weather is getting warmer, trees are starting
starting to have green leaves, buds are now emerging from all plants capable of flowering and everything seems to be on the up after a cold winter.
As usual, Melbourne is always quiet and nothing much happening lately. Everyone is busy doing his/her own daily routine
but one thing is always on everyone's mind and that is the celebration in San Francisco. We would like to come but it all depends
on getting our fare, our schedules and others.
Melbourne will have representatives going to San Francisco and it is only a matter of how many will be able to go. So, for the time
being - Melbourne is quietly doing a few plans for the upcoming celebration next year.
