Welcome to the Tonga High School Ex-Student's Newsletter for the month of September, 2003. It is now spring time in Australia and the weather is fining up so as the morale of our ex-students. It has been a very cold winter and we are now back from hibernation. In terms of news from each chapter, we don't have any for this month. However, from the academic front, we as the Tonga High School Ex-students community have so much to celebrate. Our ex-students, over the years have taken the name of the school to great heights. Not only have we conquered so many feats in Tonga but also overseas. We are privileged to have 'Evaloni Puniani as one of our proud scholars for the year.
The Tonga High School Ex-student's website has just created a new section on our website. This section is called "PhD Thesis & Education". In this section, we are going to ask all PhD holders to please send us extracts from their research work so we can share their ideas and more importantly; to encourage current students to aim for the very top. Some interesting discussions with scholars such as 'Evaloni Puniani resulted in the creation of this new section. Dr. Puniani is happy to feature in the first publication of this section and the THSESWS would like to invite both Masters and PhD holders to please send us extracts from your thesis work to be published in this new section of our website.
'Evaloni has compeleted her PhD in Chemistry from the University of Ottawa in Canada during the month of September after three years of research. We are grateful to obtain extracts from 'Evaloni's thesis to share with our ex-students. The main thrust of 'Evaloni's work was based on research regarding the chemical components of two plant species belonging to the genus;Souroubea. These two species are Souroubea gilgi and Sourboubea sympetala of the Margraviaceae family and native to Central and South America and the West Indies. Extraction and synthesis of chemical compounds from these plants have huge potential in regards to insecticides and medicine. Not only that this work is of tremendous importance in the area of medicine and agriculture but will also boost the economy of any country who will produce the replica of the chemical compounds in large scale. Without further ado, you can now read, enjoy and marvel at Dr.Puniani's excellent work.
